So I have been getting a lot of slowdowns on Vista. (the ghostly screen when shit isn't responding) and then gradually it would all fall apart and just go black. no blue screen just black.

then I would try to reboot and it would give some shit about mac addr blah blah DHCP.../ (the / being a spinny).

So i was like fuck - MY HDD is burnt out right?

So I started trouble shooting, changed the SATA cable, no luck, ran some MBAM, nothing, swapped the SATA port and now everything seems to be good but I figured I'd reach out and see if anyone has ever experienced this before.

I also put in another fan on top of the CPU just in case I was overheating (although it has yet to go over 41-42 degrees C)

Anyway, let me know - as my mexcian tech support friend quipped, "you can do everything except manager your computer."

Just curious because I've never head of a black screen of doom.

Actually there is Black screen of Death that we are starting to see a lot more over the last month and still going.

Its just a black screen with your cursor that CAN move after you log into your user account. Explorer.exe is not loading so you never see your desktop or background. Most of the time is a corrupt service or two from a windows update and will be fixed by rolling back to a previous install using Microsoft System Restore.

Other times one of the new rogue AV's fucking your shit up. But with your issue where its not happening all the time I would ahve to get my hands on it to be 100% sure whats going with yours.

nonetheless if you want true answer if its your HDD just use the BIOS hardware diag to run test. If you dont have one in your machine find out what mfg the HDD is and download its diag tool from its website and run it.

me thinks you having more software problems mzz. Im starting to get worried about you. I can easily be employed by you to be a 24 hour tech support guy if you would like. I can do it for 50$ an hour through remote access and phone support or relocate up north with you and be put on salary for 60k a year. Let me know.

1st. LOL
2nd. The way to get jukie to post is to put something in this forum. He really does love our CPUs more than us.
3rd. I figured that it was the beginning of the end for the HDD. Since it's in the new port though, I've had none of the problems I was having - I did backup everything.
4th. I think I may have been overheating my MB - I was playing L4D2 and after repositioning my heat sensor it was up at like 44 C with the new fan right on top of it...so I'm guessing it was probably up at 50 without it which is probably not the healthiest.
5th. I did run a diagnostic and it claimed that the HDD was fine. Was actually the first thing I did.
finally. So the black screen with the moving cursor is a documented problem...fantastic. Good thing VIsta updates every fucking day...

Fucking microsoft. When can Linux go mainstream so I can pwn newbs in the blissful happiness of whatever it is that Linux does. :(

all of them. it's not a virus.

I have a new hard drive sitting here that I ordered and I backed everything up on the external so it's fine and dandy but like it hasn't done it in 4 days.

ANd there is no rhyme or reason to it.

It happened again 3 nights ago _ I swapped cables etc, and it was still fucked.

I rebooted it in safe mode in the morning and then restarted it and it's been fine ever since.

It doesn't add up at all.

I really don't know. I don't download anything except verified torrents. My computer was hand built as you know so I can't blame a manufacturer. I mean this whole thing is very bizarre. Like I said I haven't had the problem in days so what the fuck. It just magically healed itself?

It doesn't make sense.

This. :giggles:

No seriously, sometimes various manufacturer parts just don't work well together, even though everything is "compatible" there are little quirks that come out when you mix and match. Especially when you use cutting edge equipment. Various bugs only show up in odd configurations. Big computer manufacturers spend large bucks on R&D and part of that is making sure that said bugs don't effect the combination of equipment they use to build their systems.

I am assuming you have checked into firmware updates, revised drivers, etc.?

It's the weirdest thing...it like "knows" it was being bad. I hooked up the backup and backed everything up obv then the new HDD arrived all shiny and shit. Now it's acting right.

....lol :(
