I've got this watch that I've had for about a year now, and it's got quite a thick strap -it's one of those surfer watches- so it picks up quite a lot of grease and dirt from my wrist. After about 3 months it started kicking out this smell of stale sweat, and I keep catching whiffs of it every so often. Thankfully nobody else notices, but it's not terribly pleasant.

I've tried cleaning it with bicarb and soaking it in salt water, but it only reduces the smell for a few days. Even polished it with some wax-based leather balm but it's not doing anything.

Does anyone know how I can clean it properly without damaging it?
It's quite a nice watch so I don't really want to get a new one. Metal straps are a bit too flashy for my liking. I like earthy stuff.

Here's what you do

First; Mix vinegar and water
Second; Put that bitch in
Third; Clean with a [preferably] clean toothbrush
Fourth; Impress the bitches with your classy, suave, and sophisticated leather watch.

Alternatively if you just don't feel like keepin' on keepin' on, you could mix ammonia and bleach and never have to worry about that g'darned watch band ever again.

Maybe you should wash your filthy sweaty wrists.

I'll have you know I shower every day. With soap and everything. :squint:

I've tried vinegar and bicarb and all that jazz, and all I end up with is a slightly less fragrant watch that stinks of vinegar. :ugh:

Maybe I'll take your second advice and just gas myself. At least the chlorine will cancel out the smell of sweat.

I had a watch like that.

The smell never goes away.

Buy a new watch.

And don't wear this one so much - it's an accessory not a necessity.

Carry around a full-sized clock, like a real man.
