Anyone have any good tips for me? I've never tried growing my own food before...

if theres cats in the neighborhood, invest in automatic sprinklers -_- they love digging up shit after you put it in the ground for them...fuckers.

we have a really weedy yard too, so we put down a border of that gardening cloth stuff around it and mulched that over too; seems to be keeping the wilds at bay pretty well.

what're you gonna try to grow? we've got pumpkins, squash, raspberries, strawberries, collards, onions, tomatoes, peppers (blech!) and eggplant

If I see a cat diggin em up, I'll just pepper it with my slingshot or bb gun.

pumpkins, tomatoes, peppers watermelon corn and a few other things

I might add berries (blue, ras and strawberries) later.

You put yer weeeed in it maaaan.

No seriously. I have never grown pumpkins or melons, but tomatoes are easy, and there is a trick to corn.

Corn for some reason has to be planted VERY close together in order to pollinate. The best configuration I have heard is a spiral pattern instead of a row like most plants, this keeps the plants close together and maximizes pollination.

Strawberries like sandy soil so get some sand to add to the ground where you plant those and stir it up well before planting. Couldn't tell you anything about blue or rasp.

Also any weeds or other non-desired plants take nutrients from the soil that your vege's could use. so weed your garden often.

You should seriously consider growing pot too. They keep a lot of predators at bay (the weed itself won't be the best) but hemp serves as a great deterrent to insects among other things.

I live on a corner lot, where you can clearly see my garden from the street. I also have a cop living less than 5 houses down in 2 of the 3 possible directions. Oh and this garden is the only divider between my house and a fire fighter...pots a no-go

I was talking to a friend yesterday about his garden and he suggested that if you grow tomatoes you need to trim back some of the extra foliage. Apparently a tomato plant will spend all the nutrients growing branches instead of tomatoes.
