WoW players, I'm looking at you. :squint:
Bit of a long article, but some games are designed with the intent of keeping you addicted, rather than entertained. Here's how. Hooray.

This is news? It's just like saying the guy who sells you crack on the corner is doing it for your entertainment.

I think they mean as in psychologically addicted long after the fun has gone, as opposed to "I'm having so much fun I just can't put this down."

I played Runescape for a bit, and there were kids who spent hours just chopping down fucking trees to build up their stats. How can anybody have the urge to do that as a leisure activity?

I'd say the wow community who said fuck that to this proved that there will be backlash. No one plays wow anymore, not true gamers anyway : the phrase "wow is a chatroom" comes to mind.

Arena isn't even mentioned in CPL anymore, I think the consumers responded resoundingly on Lich King - fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me.

this guy i used to work with, he spent hours in some online game (can't remember what, they're all basically the same) building a path. a fucking path. at what point does that become entertaining? it's not even like it led to a cliff and people were forced to walk along it, it was just a path. at least if you're chopping down a tree you might be able to transfer some of your anger in an "arrrgh, take that you fucking tree, i'll have you" kind of manner
