Hi, I'm Sammich, but I can also be called 'Sam' or 'Oi, You!'.
I hail from England, and I like reading.

I'm assuming you've been here then?
It's pretty uneventful, but between June- September, it's Tourist Central.

The Blair Witch Project

That was filmed relatively close to where I live. I have regularly travelled through the actual town in Maryland that the story takes place. Those little farm communities nestled in the hills and valleys of the Appalachians have a lot of stories like that associated with them. Not all are as strange as the Blair Witch story and most are really linked to domestic violence where a spouse or parent claim they were possessed. Real Salem witch kinds of nonsense. Blair Witch turned into something entirely different. I kinda get chills if I think too much about it when I drive through Burkittsville.
Now you think I'm trolling, but what you don't know yet is this: local legend may not include such embellished suspence building props as sticks mysteriously forming symbols and kids scared shitless yet compelled to walk into evil, but the story is actually based on true events. Also do a little research and you will see that there were legal actions filed against the producers of the movie by the town of Burkittsville. What was settled behind closed doors was basically a silence agreement concerning origins of story lines. Burkittsville wants to remain a small town and not become the next Roswell, NM.
Local knowledge of events goes more like this: sometime in the early 50's, three female students from Mt. St. Marys college, located about 50 miles north-west of Burkittsville, travelled there to research the only known "witch" story in the area. Think about it, an evil witch story was just as laughable in the fifties as it is today. The girls expected to get some audio recordings of wind erily whistling through trees and some moody black and white photos for some theology project. I've heard too many versions to know embellishments were liberally used, but it is commonly agreed that rituallistic sacrifice was involved. Some lean towards flat out insanity or cannabalism. The cameras recovered showed the type of pictures I mentioned above and other "look we're having fun camping" type photos. An audio recording was supposedly recovered and/or one of the girls was still alive when found and managed to tell some of what happened before she succumbed. Whatever was learned was too graphic and horrible to be released on public record in the 50's. Or maybe it was decided no good would come of people knowing the truth. As I said, the girls went out in search of the only "known" witch story. The name Blair was something the producers of the movie came up with. It was never a part of the story before the movie. In the Appalachian foot hills there are an abundance of witch stories. The girls happened to hear some local talking about the worst one and not being from the area assumed it was the only one. The local probably liked the attention from the girls and wanted to captivate them for as long as possible not realizing what they would do. They could of just as easily heard about a different one. Most of the local witch stories are just old women living more like the modern wiccan style. Missunderstood, but peaceful, herbal healers. To this day I hear news of black magic rituals discovered in rural areas. People are too embarrassed to admit such things happen, but occassionally I hear about black dogs being nailed to church doors in small rural towns, or black cats, or black magic symbols appearing in remote areas with evidence of a gathering.
Before you give me shit check some of the things I talked about. My family has been in Maryland since the early 1800's and I read a ton of local lore in my early teens because I doubted the family stories I would hear. Snallygaster is another word not always associated with the story, but one that can show just how region specific my knowledge of local lore is.

tl;dr?
Blair Witch Project really is based on a true story. I have knowledge of local lore established long before the movie came out.
